gameplan

I just forwarded to my boss a new proposal for a service contract and right now I’m crossing my fingers that they would heart-and- mind-and-with-open-arms accept what I wrote in that email. I’m so anxious that I can’t sleep even though I just watched Ouija and I’m now all alone in the living room. Great movie by the way.

Going back to the proposal, the firm generally needs someone who will take care of their IT capability so that they can bring efficiency in the delivery of services - primarily engineering consulting. Now, i have three things going for me - I know their system (since i built it), I know the people and I can make it better. The first two are givens since they are already facts. The third one is exciting. I would basically engineer their office system from the ground up and lay the foundation upon which future system administrators will work on. This would be my amh legacy.

Regarding this improvement thing, i will have three foci - information channels (both upward and downward), proactive planning and institutionalized work processes.

  1. information channels - formal reports to supervisor and advisories to end users
  2. proactive planning - planned expenditures and system roadmap
  3. institutionalized work processes - services will be formalized into routines so that it would be easier for end-users to familiarize themselves with services and to make other processes more efficient (the main goal of the exercise)

Beginning with these three, i hope i can start to lighten the burden for the directors regarding their IT needs. This will in effect give them more time to focus their efforts on their real roles - to steer the firm to the achievement of its goals.

Prison Thriller!

Congrats Christopher Sabando Valdez!

This guy just passed the recently concluded June 2007 Architect Licensure Examination. His sequence number (not the rank) is 445 based on PRC’s list of passers. 467 out of 1141 takers passed the said exam. He is from UP Diliman which garnered 96% passing rate.

Chris will give a BIG BLOWOUT on Monday, 23 July at his BIG MANSION in the campus. Well wishers should bring food or better yet cash to defray the cost. Hehe…

You can (c)lick on his pic to download the list :)

How “UP Naming Mahal” Came to Be

Sometime in the early 1920s, a contest was held to give expression to that elusive thing—the “UP Spirit.” A contest was held to select the lyrics to be put to music, and both words and notes were to move both students and alumni to recall what it meant to belong to the University of the Philippines. The winning entry was written by Teogenes Velez, a Liberal Arts student.

Then another contest was held to set the winning poem to music. Legend has it that a student at the Conservatory of Music, Nicanor Abelardo, had just returned home from a town fiesta in Pampanga and his wife reminded him of the contest’s deadline, which was noon of that same day. Whereupon the young man sat down and in just one hour had the piece ready, and was able to submit it on time.

The song, “UP Beloved,” was first sung before a UP audience in 1917. And from then on it has been a party of all UP activities.

The Filipino version, “UP Naming Mahal,” is a composite from seven translations received by a screening committee, which found none of them fully satisfactory, and contributed some lines themselves. Today, the song is as much an emblem of the UP spirit as the famous Oblation.

(The original key of the composition is B Flat major, which is too high for the average vocal range. Professor Hilarion Rubio of the Conservatory of Music suggested that it be in the key of G major and should be sung in the original tempo of eighty quarter notes in one minute.)

U.P. Naming Mahal

U.P. naming mahal
Pamantasang hirang
Ang tinig namin
Sana’y inyong dinggin

Malayong lupain
Amin mang marating
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin

Luntian at pula
Sagisag magpakailanman
Ating ipagdiwang bulwagan ng dangal

Humayo’t itanghal, giting at tapang
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan

batangas city and other stuff for azneita project year 1

Batangas City Bearings - 3°45′25.96″N, 121°3′29.2″E

The date is September 8, 2006 and I was then alone in the Internet Committee Office of the UP International Center working as network support personnel. It has been weeks since Google disabled my Adsense account on alleged click fraud and ever since then I stopped blogging. Then inspiration hit me like a boulder - bang! Azneita Project was born!

Primarily, AP (Azneita Project) should be about Batangas City, Technology, Politics and Entrepreneurship. As of last count, Technology posts claimed the top spot with 17 posts, Small Business followed with 15, Public Administration and Politics with a total of 15 and lastly, Batangas City with 4. The seeming disparity could be attributed to academics, work and sheer laziness.

AP by the way is now a full-pledged PageRank 3 website - a step down from a PageRank 4 that slipped. Number 33 in Batangas City tag (Google Search).

The dismal posts in the supposed to be core topics reflects unfocused writing and so we will remedy that. To do that, emphasis will be given to our dear hometown - Batangas City in the upcoming months. Much can still be done to right the ship that has gone askew! Avast lads!

Basecamp™: Project Collaboration Tool

I came upon Basecamp in search of a collaboration tool where members of a workgroup could easily post and see announcements pertaining to a specific project. I originally thought of building a website that would be locally hosted in the intranet just for this purpose, but it would be time consuming and not to mention - tedious (i am lazy).

The premise of the web app is quite straightforward - online collaboration. And i may add that Basecamp does it so well because it is simple without limiting the users too much. The app has five (5) major functions: Messages, To-Do, Milestones, Writeboards, and Chat.

What i like best in this web app is its simplicity. Very much like WordPress™, Basecamp is very intuitive and you can master all its nuances in such a short time.

  • Messages - i am using this as my shoutouts to all my slaves
  • To-Do - i like the way a tasks are crossed out whenever they are completed. tasks can also be configured in such a way that completion of set tasks will contribute to surpassing a milestone.
  • Milestones - it has a calendar that lets you see your deadlines. and since everyone loves deadlines, it comes in different colors matching your ineptitude (hehe).
  • Writeboards - will redirect you to another web app that handles writeboards. works very much like forums.
  • Chat - quite pricey since you need to register a paid account for chat, otherwise only 4 can simultaneously gossip while pretending to work. I disabled this feature because my account is just the free version. No need for a four-man chat room.

Fave Pic from the Windy City

A picture paints a thousand words and it tells a story just as well as any large amount of descriptive text can do. I am no Shakespeare or Yeats nor do i profess to be another Da Vinci or Picasso. But being the simple me, i can honestly say that this picture speaks and its heart beats.

You may ask if i’m playing cupid here. My answer would be, “No. I don’t even know the girl. But I can see that my friend there is happy in each other’s company (I believe the other one is too).

Me posting this picture here is my way of capturing the feeling the picture exudes. It is my way of using this “achy old arm (and knees) to push back the sun into the sky… and give us one more day of summer.”

Nero 7 Premium Essentials

If you do not know yet, the keys above will give you a licensed Nero 7 Ultra Edition. I have already tried both keys and both works. The first time, I downloaded a copy of Nero from its own official website. That should be nero 7.9.6.0 at that time and i used the first set of keys. After a while, i changed OS and so i have to install another one. I downloaded the most recent installer, nero premium reloaded 7.10.1.0. Luckily, the keys still work and this time i used the second set. I believe, both keys will work with any installer as long as they are version 7s.

Updated: July 19 - keys are removed

bush and gma have stark similarities

New York Times reported that

“The president (George W. Bush) invoked executive privilege today to defy subpoenas from Congress for testimony on the firings of prosecutors.”

It is amazing how both presidents used “executive privilege” to forbid members of the executive to testify in investigations being conducted by the legislative.

The Philippine Supreme Court ruled that EO 464 is unconstitutional (especially the part of presidential permission). It is curious how the US Supreme Court will rule theirs.
